Questions about Sorted

The basics
What does Sorted do?
It adds a few buttons to your inventory and chest screens. They sort, move items to and from the chests around you, and search everything you have put away. It also shows what is inside shulker boxes, and chests and barrels if you want, without opening them.
How do I sort a chest or my inventory?
Open a chest and click the sort button above it, on the right. For your inventory, press R or click the sort button under it. Your hotbar is left alone. Shift, Ctrl or Alt with the click sorts a chest in columns, rows or compact. See Sorting chests and Sorting your inventory.
How do I put everything away in my chests?
Stand near your chests, open your inventory and click Quick Stack. Every stack goes to a chest within reach that already holds that item or the same material, and those chests light up. Your hotbar stays, and so does anything on your The keep list. See Quick Stack.
Which Minecraft versions does it work on?
Fabric on every Minecraft version from 1.21.1 to 1.21.11 and from 26.1 to 26.3, and NeoForge on 1.21.1, 1.21.3, 1.21.4, 1.21.5, 1.21.8, 1.21.10 and 1.21.11 and on 26.1.2 to 26.3. Minecraft 1.21 itself isn't supported: play 1.21.1. Every version has the same Sorted, with the same screens and settings, and only needs Fabric API on Fabric. The Modrinth app picks the right file for you.
1.21.11 and 26.3 on Fabric, and 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3 on NeoForge, are played before each release. The others are built from the same code but not tested each time, so a bug report for them helps.
The screens look different from the pictures, or a setting is missing.
You probably have an older version. New versions go up on Modrinth and CurseForge at the same time, but CurseForge checks every file before it shows, and that can take days. The newest version is on Modrinth first.
To see which version you have, look at Sorted in Mod Menu on Fabric or the mod list on NeoForge. The changelog says what each version changed.
Does it work on NeoForge or Forge?
On NeoForge, yes: there is a NeoForge file for 1.21.1, 1.21.3, 1.21.4, 1.21.5, 1.21.8, 1.21.10 and 1.21.11 and for 26.1.2 to 26.3, and it needs nothing else.
1.21.2, 1.21.6, 1.21.7 and 1.21.9 never had a finished NeoForge, so there Sorted is Fabric only. There is no Forge version.
Does the server need it too?
No. Sorted only runs on your client. It works on vanilla servers, Realms and in modpacks.
Does it work with chests from other mods?
When the mod adds its containers to Sorted, yes. For any other, open one, close it and type /sorted storage add. See Containers from other mods.
Making a mod yourself? See For mod developers.
Which languages is it in?
English, Dutch, German, French and Russian. It follows the language you play in. The Russian translation was made by a member of the community.
Want it in your language? Say so on Discord. A translation needs someone who speaks the language to read it through, so help with that is welcome.
Is it free?
Yes. If you want to support the work, there is a Ko-fi page.
How do I open the settings?
Type /sorted config, or open Sorted from Mod Menu or the NeoForge mod list. Every option is on the Settings page.
The settings start in the Minecraft look. Look: Minecraft at the top switches to the VoxelSprout look, for every VoxelSprout mod you have.
How do I set or change a key?
In the game's own Controls screen: press Esc, click Options..., Controls... and Key Binds..., and scroll to the Inventory group. The Sorted keys are there: Sorted: Open Container Search, Sorted: Quick Sort Inventory and Sorted: Open Keep List. Click the button next to one and press a key.
Sort is on R and search on `. The keep list has no key until you set one.
Servers
Can I use it on any server?
It runs on your client, so it works on any server you can join. It moves items with the same clicks you would make by hand, only faster. Some servers do not allow inventory mods, so check the rules.
Sorted has a list of servers that ban this kind of mod, and switches itself off completely when you join one. See Servers.
Will I get kicked for clicking too fast?
Some anti-cheat plugins kick for fast clicking. If a server kicks you while a sort is running, Sorted slows down on that server and remembers it: 80, then 40, 20, 10 and 5 actions a second, until the kicks stop.
You can also set the speed yourself with Actions per tick. The default is 15 a tick, about 300 a second. In singleplayer everything happens at once.
Does Quick Stack open chests on a server?
Yes, the ones it has no recent record of. A server only tells your game what is in a chest when you open it, so Quick Stack opens those chests, reads them and closes them again. You hear the lids. Chests it already knows are only opened to put something in, unless you turn on Open every chest before stacking.
Can a server turn Sorted features off?
Yes, on servers that run VoxelSprout Policy, a companion that server admins install on the server. It can turn off sorting, sorting on its own, Quick Stack (with Quick Empty and Pull All), Quick Fill, reading chests in passing and highlights through walls, and cap how many clicks Sorted makes per tick. When you join, one chat line says what is off, and your own settings are kept for other servers.
Running a server? The VoxelSprout Policy wiki has the setup.
Sorted says it is turned off on this server.
That server is on the built-in list of servers that do not allow automation. On those, Sorted does nothing at all, the same as not having it installed. You can turn the list off with Built-in server blacklist, but those servers ban mods like this one.
Sorting and moving items
Why is my hotbar not sorted?
On purpose. Your hotbar is where you put things so you can reach them, so sorting only touches the main inventory.
How does it decide what goes together?
By what things are, not by their names. Tools, weapons and armor come first, then food, then blocks grouped by material, then the rest. In a chest, a redstone chest gets dust and repeaters together and pistons after them, and a wood chest gets a row per kind of wood. See Sorting chests.
Quick Stack left some items in my inventory.
Quick Stack only puts an item in a chest that already holds a fair amount of it, or of the same material. One stray item in a chest full of other things does not count, so that chest is skipped. Items with no chest stay with you.
Shift+Click Quick Stack to put those away too, in the chest that fits best. Also check the The keep list: kept items never leave.
Can a click always sort a chest compact?
Yes. Set Click to sort containers to Compact in the Sorting settings. It also takes Columns or Rows; Auto, the default, picks the layout from what is in the chest.
For a single compact sort, Alt+Click the sort button. See Sorting chests.
Can it sort on its own?
Yes, two options, both off by default. Auto-sort inventory on pickup re-sorts your inventory when you pick something up, once you have sorted it by hand at least once. Auto-sort containers on open sorts a chest when you open it, in the layout you last used on it.
What do Quick Empty, Quick Fill and Pull All do?
With a chest open: Quick Empty moves your main inventory into the chest, Quick Fill tops up the stacks you carry from the chest, and Pull All moves the whole chest into your inventory. In your own inventory, Quick Fill tops up from the chests around you. See Quick Fill, Quick Empty and Pull All.
Can I move or hide the progress card?
Quick Stack, Quick Fill and emptying into the chests around you show their progress in a small card above the hotbar. In the HUD tab of the settings, Move panels on screen lets you drag and resize it, and Show under Nearby transfer set to Hidden puts the progress back on the line above the hotbar. Reset all panels puts every card back where it started. See Settings.
Opening chat does not move the card. It does step aside while new chat lines show; turn off Make room for chat in the same tab and it stays put.
What happens to my items when I die?
Sorted remembers where everything was. When you pick your items back up within 8 minutes, they go back to the slots they were in, hotbar and armor included. See After you die.
Search and labels
How do I find an item in my chests?
Press `, or click the magnifier under your inventory, and type its name in Find Items. Click the item and every container that holds it lights up, through walls. It finds what is in the containers you have opened. See Search.
How do I give a chest a name?
Rename it in an anvil, as an item, then place it: the name shows on its label. Labels on chests and barrels are off by default, so turn on Chests and Barrels under Labels on in the In the world tab. A placed chest can not be renamed where it stands: empty it, break it, rename it and place it again. See Give a container a name.
Labels do not show on chests.
Labels on chests and barrels are off by default. Turn on Chests and Barrels in the In the world tab of the settings. On a server, a container shows its contents after you have opened it once. Labels are hidden behind walls and past Range.
The search shows old contents.
It shows what was in each container the last time you opened it. On a server another player may have changed it since. Open the chest again, or turn on Auto-scan nearby containers to read containers within reach as you walk past.
Where is the chest memory kept?
On your computer, in .minecraft/cache/sorted/, one file per world and per server. Nothing is uploaded. Clear this world's cache in the settings deletes the one for where you are.
Does it work with BuildPrint?
Yes. With both installed, BuildPrint's material list shows how many of each block are in your chests, and can light those chests up.
When something is wrong
Something is broken. What should I send?
Type /sorted report, or press Write a report... in the Help tab of the settings. You see everything that would be sent, and nothing goes until you press Send. When your report gets an answer, the game tells you.
Or share your latest.log, from the logs folder of your Minecraft folder, with the Minecraft version, your loader (Fabric or NeoForge), the Sorted version and a short description of what happened, on Discord. See Bug reports.
An item was left on my cursor after a sort.
Sorted checks for this at the end of every sort and puts the item back in a slot. If it still happens, send the log: Sorted writes a line there each time it has to.
