The basics
What does BuildPrint do?
It shows a schematic in your world as a see-through ghost, so you can build it block by block. Load a schematic, put it where you want it, and build: the colors show what is missing or wrong, the material list says what to gather, easy place puts the right block down with a right-click, and the printer can place the blocks for you.
I am new to this. Where do I start?
With the walkthrough that opens the first time you join a world. It shows how to load a build, put it in place, read the colours and build it, with small live scenes, and lets you set your keys. It takes a minute.
Skipped it? Type /buildprint onboarding in chat to run it again. After that, Getting started covers the same ground in more detail.
How do I load a schematic?
Press B to open the menu, pick the file in the Local tab and click Load. It shows as a ghost where you stand. The Local tab lists the schematics folder in your Minecraft folder, so put downloaded files there. Or drop a file onto the game window, or click Place on a build in the Marketplace tab.
Then put it where you want it with the editor (G). See Getting started.
How do I move a schematic to where I want it?
With the editor. Press G, press 5 for Place and left-click the ground where it should go. Then 6 for Move: drag the arrows to slide it, drag or click the green arcs to turn it, and right-click the white cube in the middle to flip it. Scrolling pushes it away or brings it closer. Esc when it sits right. Pictures and every tool are on the editor page.
To type exact coordinates instead, open the menu with B and use Position in the Loaded tab. Auto align is only for a build that is already partly standing. See Moving and aligning.
Does it place the blocks for me?
Only if you turn that on. By default you place every block yourself, with the ghost showing where. With easy place (N) you right-click the ghost and the right block goes down the right way.
The printer places the missing blocks around you while you move through the build. Press B, click the gear at the bottom right, and turn on Printer mode (auto-build) in the Building tab. Many servers count the printer as cheating, so check the rules first. See The printer.
Which Minecraft versions does it work on?
Fabric on every Minecraft version from 1.21.1 to 1.21.11 and from 26.1 to 26.3, and NeoForge on 1.21.1, 1.21.3, 1.21.4, 1.21.5, 1.21.8, 1.21.10 and 1.21.11 and on 26.1.2 to 26.3. Minecraft 1.21 itself isn't supported: play 1.21.1. There is a file for each version and loader, and every version has everything BuildPrint does. On Fabric you also need Fabric API; Mod Menu is optional. On NeoForge nothing else is needed.
Does it work on Forge, NeoForge or Quilt?
BuildPrint runs on Fabric and NeoForge. There is a NeoForge file for 1.21.1, 1.21.3, 1.21.4, 1.21.5, 1.21.8, 1.21.10 and 1.21.11 and for 26.1.2 to 26.3, and it needs nothing else. 1.21.2, 1.21.6, 1.21.7 and 1.21.9 never had a finished NeoForge, so there BuildPrint is Fabric only. There is no Forge version.
Do I need an account?
No. Loading, building, the marketplace and joining a session all work without one. You only sign in to like builds or publish your own, and to start a session under your name.
Is it free?
Yes. If you want to support the work, there is a Ko-fi page.
Which languages is it in?
English, Dutch, French, German and Russian. The Russian translation was made by a member of the community. If something reads wrong, tell me on Discord.
Want it in your language? Say so on Discord. A translation needs someone who speaks the language to read it through, so help with that is welcome. Until then, your browser can translate this wiki for you.
How do I open the settings?
Press B and click the gear at the bottom right of the menu, or type /buildprint config. It is also in Mod Menu on Fabric and in the mod list on NeoForge. Every option is described on the Settings page.
How do I set or change a key?
The quickest way is the walkthrough: type /buildprint onboarding, go to the shortcut pages, click a key and press the one you want. Each key has a line on what it does, and one that something else also uses shows in red.
Or in the game's own Controls screen: press Esc, click Options..., Controls... and Key Binds..., and scroll to the BuildPrint group. Click the button next to an action and press a key.
The printer, easy break, the view filter, the status panel, container contents and hiding builds have no key until you set one. A key for Toggle Printer turns the printer on and off without opening the settings, and shows Printer ON or Printer OFF above the hotbar. All keys are on the Shortcuts page.
Servers and rules
Can I use it on any server?
BuildPrint only runs on your client, so it works on any server you can join. Showing a ghost and the material list change nothing in the world.
Easy place and placing in mid-air make placing much easier than by hand, and the printer places blocks for you. Many servers count that as cheating. Whether you are allowed to use them is up to the server, so check the rules. All three are off by default.
Will I get banned for using it?
That depends on the server and what you turn on. The ghost and the material list only show things on your screen. Easy place and placing in mid-air put blocks down in ways you could not by hand, and the printer places them without you clicking. Anti-cheat or staff can notice that. If the rules do not say, ask before you use them.
Can a server turn features off?
Yes, with VoxelSprout Policy (it used to be BuildPrint Policy), a companion that server admins install on the server. A server can turn off easy place, drag place, easy break, placing in mid-air, auto-rotate, the printer, paste, saving schematics of its world and the editor's free camera. It can limit the printer's speed and range, and how many blocks one paste may change.
When you join such a server a chat line says what is off. The shield at the bottom right of the BuildPrint menu, or /buildprint rules, shows the details. Your own settings are not changed. See Servers.
Running a server? The VoxelSprout Policy wiki has the setup: /vspolicy opens a chest menu where you click features off, and there are caps and permissions for ranks.
Does the server need to install anything?
No. BuildPrint is client-side only. Sync sessions also run without anything on the Minecraft server.
VoxelSprout Policy is optional. With it a server can turn features off, and paste goes through the server itself, which is quicker than commands and needs no operator status.
Files and Litematica
Can I keep using my Litematica files?
Yes. BuildPrint opens .litematic files directly and saves in the same format. On first launch it offers to bring over your Litematica placements, so your builds show up where you left them. Your files are not changed.
Which file formats can it open?
.litematic, Sponge .schem, classic .schematic, vanilla structure .nbt and Axiom .bp. It saves as .litematic.
Where do I put my schematics?
In the schematics/ folder in your Minecraft folder. Subfolders work. You can also drop a file onto the game window, or use Open File... in the Local tab.
Can I make my own schematics?
Yes, with the editor. Press G to open it (B up to 0.1.25). Pick Select with 1 and click two corners of the build, or Magic select with 2 and click the build. Look at a side of the box and scroll to fit it. Save it with Save on 4. The file goes into your schematics/ folder as a .litematic, to load or share. See The editor.
How do I resize a selection box?
Look at a side of the box, near its middle: it lights up. Scroll up to push that side out and down to pull it in. That works with Select and Resize, from anywhere, also for the far side.
Or pick Resize (3), click a corner and drag its arrows, or face a direction and scroll to move that corner. Hold Alt while you drag to place an edge freely. See Resize a box.
What does the scroll wheel do in the editor?
It works on the tool in your hand, and the line above the toolbar says what it does now. Select and Resize move the side of the box you aim nearest, Magic select changes what a click picks, Place and Move push the build away or bring it closer. On the other tools it sets the camera speed.
Ctrl and the wheel is camera speed on every tool, and Alt and the wheel the next tool. Q and E and the number keys change tool too. See The scroll wheel.
Where did the Rotate tool go?
Since 0.1.34 Move (6) turns builds too. Click a green arc for a quarter-turn, right-click one to turn back, or drag it round. Right-click the white cube in the middle to flip the build. P on a block turns it around that block, and R goes back to the middle. See The gizmo.
Can I save more than my render distance?
Yes. Any size saves in the background, with its progress above the hotbar. In single-player it reads the saved world, so it reaches past your render distance.
On a server it has what your game has loaded, plus with Bobby the chunks Bobby remembers. If chunks are still unseen, a card says how many and which way to go, and it saves by itself once you have seen them. Save now keeps it with gaps, Stop drops it. See Big saves.
Can I run BuildPrint and Litematica together?
They can be installed side by side. The benchmark on this site was run that way, with only one of the two having builds loaded at a time.
Can I paste a build into the world in creative?
Yes. Load the build, open the Loaded tab and click Paste, or pick Paste on the editor's toolbar. It goes in in one go, with chest contents and sign text, and Undo takes it back. Only the layers in view are pasted. See Paste.
In single-player it writes straight into the world. On a server it uses VoxelSprout Policy if the server has it, otherwise Axiom, /fill commands if you are an operator, or WorldEdit. With FAWE the build goes up in one piece, which is much faster. Otherwise, without operator status the server lets commands through at about one a second, so a big build takes a while that way.
Does a schematic I save include what is in the chests?
In single-player, yes: everything inside the containers, and which crafter slots are locked, also past your render distance. On a server your client only knows the containers you opened in this session, so only those are included, and the game tells you how many were saved empty. Mobs are not saved. Armor stands, item frames, paintings, minecarts and boats are.
Are my builds remembered when I log out?
Yes. What is loaded, and where, is saved per world and per server and comes back when you join again. Builds in other dimensions are at the bottom of the Loaded list, in folded sections such as In the Nether. You can turn this off with Remember placements.
Building
How do I get all the materials for a build?
Open Materials on the build in the Loaded tab and click Gather. A card then shows what is still to get, wherever you go: what you go out for (logs, not planks), or the blocks as built if you pick that under Gather card, after what you carry. With Sorted, what is in your chests stays on the card, marked, until you carry it. Picking something up says above the hotbar how far along it is, and the card goes once you carry everything. With the layer view on it counts only the layers on show.
At a crafting table or a stonecutter it says what to make from what you carry. In a Build together session, what you pick up is left to you on the others' cards. See Gather.
How do I see the whole build again, not one layer?
That is the layer view. Press B, open the Loaded tab, select the build and set Layers to Off in the View group. The . and , keys turn the layer view on, so a stray press can switch it on.
To see a few layers instead of one, leave it on and use - and + on the Range row. See Layer view.
Can I show only some blocks of a build, like the logs first?
Yes. Press K to show only the block in your hand in the build you stand in, and again for everything. Or use the eye on a row of the material list: click to hide that material, Shift-click to show only it.
Once what is on show is placed, the rest comes back by itself. The printer, easy place and paste follow what is on show. See Show only some materials.
How do I get rid of the blue box or the blue outlines?
Blue outlines on single blocks mark the blocks still to place. Turn off Outline missing blocks in the Rendering tab of the settings. It is off unless you, or the Checking a build preset, turned it on.
The blue box around the whole build is its bounding box: the edges of the space the schematic takes up, so you see where it goes. It has no setting of its own. Hide the build with the eye next to it in the Loaded tab, or select it and click Remove when you are done. See The ghost.
Can I build on water or in mid-air?
Yes, with easy place and the printer. Place in liquids builds into water and lava with nothing solid next to it, and is on by default. Place in mid-air places a block with nothing to build against, and is off by default. Turn it on in the Building tab of the settings. With both on you can build straight onto open water.
Servers with strict anti-cheat refuse blocks placed this way, and a server can turn both off. See Place in mid-air.
Can BuildPrint line a build up with one that is already standing?
Yes, when part of it already stands. Stand near the build and pick Auto align (7) in the editor, or click Auto in the Loaded tab. It finds the build in the world and sets position, rotation and flip. A schematic that is not built yet is matched to the ground it was saved with, if it was saved with some.
A schematic you downloaded has nothing to match in your world: put it in place with the editor instead. See Moving and aligning.
Auto align could not find my build.
Chat says why it stopped. Most often too little of the build is standing yet to be sure where it goes, so it leaves the build where it was rather than guess.
Stand close to the build, so the chunks it is in are loaded, and build a little more of it first. Blocks that are rare in the area count the most: a few of those make it much easier to find. If the build is further away than 12 chunks, raise Auto-align search radius in the Performance tab. Otherwise put it in place by hand with Position in the Loaded tab. See Auto align.
Easy place says there is no block in my inventory.
In survival you need to own the block. If it is anywhere in your inventory it is moved to your hand for you. If you do not have it at all, easy place cannot place it.
A block will not go down with easy place.
Easy place does not put down a block facing the wrong way. If it cannot reach the right direction from where you stand, try from another side. Some blocks need the block they rest on first. With Build prerequisites first on, that one is placed first.
Why did the printer stop?
The printer only places blocks you carry and only within your reach, and it says so above the hotbar when it has nothing left to place here, with where what you carry goes next. Move through the build to print more. With the layer view on it only prints the layers on screen. A block that failed is not tried again until something changes, for example when you move. Blocks you do not carry, and water, are skipped until your inventory changes.
Why does the printer build the floor before the walls?
It works layer by layer from the bottom up, and in each layer the full blocks first and decoration last. That keeps walls from going up around an unfinished floor, and lets you land on a floor you are flying over. The blocks right around you at your own height go in last, so you do not get walled in while others are still missing.
The printer leaves barrels, pistons or observers unplaced.
With Face directional blocks yourself on, which is the default, the printer places these only while you look the right way. Turn to face the way the block should point. Turn the setting off to let the printer turn your view for them. That is faster, and some will land turned wrong.
Can it place waterlogged blocks?
There is an experimental setting, Auto-use water bucket, that is off by default. It can misfire. Without it, add the water by hand.
Why is a crop, a lit furnace or a leaf block not marked as wrong?
Those are states you cannot place, and some change on their own. With Survival sanity checks on they do not count as mistakes. Turn it off if you want every difference marked.
Can it fill chests or place mobs?
It shows what goes inside a container and helps you fill it. Open the container and the wanted items sit in the slots as ghosts. Fill moves them over from your inventory. It is not done for you while building, except for crafters: their locked slots are set when they are placed, and their items can be put in if you turn that on.
BuildPrint does not spawn entities. The ghost shows decoration such as armor stands and item frames so you can place them yourself. See Container contents.
Why does a chest say its contents are not checked?
On a server your client only learns what is in a container while it is open. Open it once and BuildPrint compares it with the schematic and remembers the result. In single-player this is not needed: containers near you are checked on their own.
With Sorted installed, BuildPrint can also tell from what Sorted has seen that a chest, barrel or shulker box holds the wrong items.
Does the order of items in a chest matter?
By default yes, because a hopper empties a chest from the first slot on, and in a contraption that can matter. Turn off Slot order counts in chests to compare only the totals for chests, barrels and shulker boxes. For hoppers, droppers, dispensers, crafters, furnaces and brewing stands the slots always count.
I use other items than the schematic. How do I get the comparator signal right?
Open the container. The panel next to it shows the comparator signal the container gives now and the signal it gives with the items of the schematic. Fill it until the two numbers are the same.
Performance and shaders
Can I stop BuildPrint's cards from moving when chat shows?
Opening chat leaves them where they are. They only step aside for new chat lines, so those stay readable. To keep them still for those too, turn off Make room for chat in the HUD tab of the settings.
Does it work with Sodium?
Yes. BuildPrint runs next to Sodium.
Does it work with shaders?
The ghost shows under Iris shader packs. Players have tested it with Complementary, BSL, Bliss, Photon and I Like Vanilla, also on very large builds and together with Voxy and Better Clouds. The pack does not light or shadow the ghost: it is drawn on top of the finished picture.
The ghost looks blurry or wrong with a shader pack.
First make sure you have the newest version: several versions fixed problems with shader packs, and the newest version is on Modrinth first, often days before CurseForge.
Still wrong? Run /buildprint report in game with a screenshot, and say which shader pack and which version of it you use. See Bug reports.
A build disappeared and chat said BuildPrint hid it.
When the frame rate stays low, BuildPrint hides the nearest build to help the game recover. Show it again from the Loaded tab. To stop this, turn off Hide builds when lag persists in the Performance settings.
How big can a build be?
There is no fixed limit. In the tests on this site, ten large builds with 3.6 million blocks in total ran at 199 fps on an Apple M4 Max. Your numbers will be different.
When something is wrong
Something is broken. What should I send?
Run /buildprint report in game, or click Write a report... in the Help tab of the settings. You see everything that would be sent, with names and paths taken out, and nothing goes until you press Send. When there is an answer, the game tells you. You can also ask on Discord. See Bug reports.
Item and tab icons in my inventory are invisible after changing shaders.
That is a bug in Iris on Minecraft 26.2, not in BuildPrint. It also happens without BuildPrint installed. Scrolling through the whole creative item list once brings the icons back.
The preview says the build is too large.
The 3D preview in the menu is skipped for very large builds. The build itself still loads and shows in the world.
